Signed and dated: ‘S Andrews 1801’.
Inscribed on backing paper: ‘Painted by S. Andrews at’ ‘Berampore Octr 1801,’ and on scrap of paper inside the frame: ‘W.M.Ba’[ker]’ given me b’[y] ‘Mary Allen who d’[ied?] ‘31st Octr 1881. This miniature of my father I suppose was done in India between 1790 & 1800 when he was 30 to 40 years of age. G.T.B Fort Wm.’
Water-colour on ivory; oval 7.3 by 6 cm.
Purchased 1995.
Note: William Massey Baker was born at Cork and joined the Bengal Native Infantry in 1778, sailing for India on the ‘Gatton’ in the same year. Served as Captain of the 1/10th B.N.I. and was promoted Major of the 19th B.N.I. in 1800. He retired as Lieutenant-Colonel in 1806 and died at Fort William near Cork. He married Mary Towgood Davies of County Cork in 1807. At least one son followed his father into the Indian army but the author of the inscription has not yet been traced.
