COLEBROOKE, ROBERT HYDE (1762-1808)
An outstanding surveyor and draftsman. In India with Bengal Infantry 1778-1808. On survey duty during second Mysore War 1781-85. Author and artist of ‘Twelve views of places in the kingdom of Mysore’ (London, 1794). On return march from Madras to Calcutta in 1785, surveyed route. Rest of service passed in survey department, Bengal. Up-country in Bengal, 1785-87; accompanied Alexander Kyd, Surveyor-General, to survey newly acquired island of Penang, 1787; assistant for charge of maps and charts at Calcutta, June 1789; accompanied Kyd to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, November 1789-April 1790. Third Mysore War. Surveyor-General, 1800-08: the first infantry officer to hold this post. Died at Bhagalpur. Brother-in-law of James Blunt.
