HEARSEY, HYDER YOUNG (1782-1840)
Natural son of Capt. Andrew Wilson Hearsey (1752-98) by a Jat ladyand half-brother of Sir John Bennet Hearsey. Appointed ADC to Nawab Sa’adat ‘Ali Khan in 1798. Entered Sindhia’s service under Perron, 1799, became DQMG of the Maratha army, but broke with Perron and served with George Thomas. Came over to Lord Lake on Wellesley’s proclamation of 1803, bringing with him a regiment of cavalry in command of which he served at capture of Agra, relief of Delhi, and battle of Dig. Married Khanum Zuhur-ul-Nissa, daughter of one of the deposed Nawabs of Cambay, like William Gardner, both she and her sister having been adopted by the emperor Akbar II. He lived on her estates at Kareli near Bareilly. In 1808 he went with Webb and Raper on the expedition to survey the source of the Ganges, but tried to gain credit by copying Webb's map and forwarding it to London as his own. He journeyed to Lake Manosarovar in Tibet with Moorcroft 1812. Raised local levy in Anglo-Nepal war in 1815, seriously wounded 1 April and imprisoned in Almora until the Gurkha surrender of Kumaon. He laid claim to the whole of the Dun, having been granted the parganahs by exiled the Raja of Garhwal, but could not establish his case. Bareilly insurrection 1816, siege and capture of Bharatpur, afterwards elected Asst. Prize Agent. Lived quietly thereafter on his estates.
