HOME, ROBERT (1752-1834)
Home studied under Angelica Kaufmann and in Italy. He returned to London and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1770, 1771 and 1778. He went to Dublin for a time, but returned to London in 1789. The next year he sailed for India, arriving in Madras by January 1791. He accompanied the British troops during the 1792 campaign against Tipu Sultan and produced ‘Select’ ‘Views in Mysore’ in 1794 and ‘A Description of Seringapatam’ in 1796.
While in Madras he sent home ‘The Reception of the Mysore Princess as hostages by the Marquis Cornwallis’ and ‘The Death of Colonel Moorhouse at the Storming of Bangalore’. In 1795 he moved to Calcutta where he painted many portraits and decorated the new Government House. In 1814 he went to Lucknow where he became official historical and portrait painter to the Nawabs of Oudh, first Sa’adat ‘Ali Khan and then Ghazi al-Din. In addition to painting pictures he superintended the making and decorating of furniture, carriages, boats and howdahs. From 1828 to 1834 he lived at Cawnpore.

WD3775, ff.1-27
Twenty-two loose wash drawings together with a map and three plans, originally bound in an album. Each drawing signed ‘R. Home 1792’ in sepia ink, with pencil inscriptions in another hand below.
Presented by Lady Briscoe, descendant of the artist, 1980, with WD3776.
Note: Home accompanied the British army under Cornwallis during the 3rd Mysore War 1791-1792 and drew many of the hill forts, or droogs, captured during the campaign. The present drawings form part of this series and were probably the original drawings later engraved by various hands and published as ‘Select views in Mysore, the country of Tippoo Sultan’, published by R. Bowyer, London, 1794.
