JAMES, MARIANNE JANE (b.1805)
Born India, fourth daughter of Frederick Reeves, Bombay Civil Service and his wife Catherine, while her father was Military Paymaster at Kanara. She married the Rev. John Thomas James, Vicar of Flitton-with-Silsoe, Bedfordshire, in November 1823. James was appointed Bishop of Calcutta in 1827 on the death of Bishop Heber and the couple sailed for India in July 1827, taking their youngest child, leaving their two elder children in the care of the parents of Mrs. James. Six months after their arrival at Calcutta, in January 1828, they set off for a tour of the Upper Provinces, but on reaching Bhagalpur the Bishop’s ill-health forced them to return to Calcutta. It was hoped to restore his health with a sea voyage to Penang, however he died on board the ‘Marquess of Huntley’ in Sagar Roads in August 1828. Mrs. James and their baby went on to Penang and then returned to England, reaching Portsmouth in January 1829. Both Bishop James and his wife were keen artists and Mrs. James exhibited her work at Somerset House. See ‘A brief memoir ... of John Thomas James, Lord Bishop of Calcutta’, London, 1830, and WD11 etc. For a portrait of Marianne James as a child by Edward Nash, see WD4528.
