LYSAGHT, PATRICK (b.1809)

Born Upper Shandon, County Cork. British Army. Private, HM 78th Regiment of Foot, in Ceylon from 1826 to 1838. Lysaght developed a severe form of elephantiasis known as Galle leg, probably as a result of infection from mosquito bites, and was discharged as medically unfit in 1841 at Dublin.

Fourteen views of Ceylon which formed part of the collection made by Sir Robert Wilmot Horton while he was Governor and Commander-in-Chief in Ceylon, 1831-1837. They represent the artistic skills of a private soldier when many could neither read nor write.
