FIDLOR, LLEWELLYN L.(b.1804)
In India from 1824. A Bombardier, in the 2nd Battalion, Bombay Artillery, he was apparently an artist before proceeding to India, where he worked as a draughtsman for William Henry Sykes (1790-1872), Bombay Army l804-31, Director of the East India Company 1840, and Chairman 1856. These drawings were made for Sykes between 1824 and 1826 when he was engaged on a great survey of the Deccan, which occupied him from 1824 to 1831. His collection of specimens made during the survey was presented to the Museum on 23rd July 1831. Most of Sykes' drawings are now in the British Museum (Natural History). There are 10 volumes of Manuscript Notes with a few small pencil or pen-and-ink sketches by Sykes himself as well as some water-colour drawings by Fidlor describing the Economic Plants and Agriculture of the Deccan. There are another 10 volumes of descriptions and observations on plants, animals and agricultural implements of the Deccan illustrated by over 280 water-colour drawings , as well as a small manuscript 'Reports on the Dakhan' with 21 drawings , dated Poona, 1 Jan. 1831.
