WHITE, GEORGE FRANCIS (1808-1898)
Born Chatham. British Army, HM 31st Regiment of Foot. Cornet 1825; Lieutenant 1828; Captain 1841; Major 1848. Retired on half pay as Lieutenant-Colonel 1854. In India with his regiment from 1825 to 1846. Served in the Sutlej campaign 1846 including the battles of Mudki and Ferozeshah and was awarded medal and clasp. Chief Constable of County Durham 1848. Died Durham. White was a skilful amateur artist and many of his drawings were worked up and engraved, see ‘Views in India, chiefly among the Himalaya Mountains taken during tours in the direction of Mussooree, Simla, the sources of the Jumna and Ganges etc in 1829, 31, 32.’ London, 1836; ‘Hindostan, the shores of the Red Sea and the Himalaya Mountains.’ London, 1845. White’s drawings were used by Robert Burford for a panorama of the Himalayas exhibited at Leicester Square in 1847, and it is possible he also had some involvement in published works by other artists, see WD4304 and 4305.
