- Title:
- Drawings laid down in an album with paper covers inscribed: 'Unfinished Sepia Sketches R. Ganges, Calcutta & other parts of India'. As in WD4304 some of the drawings shed light on D’Oyly’s 'Views of Calcutta'. Artist(s): White, George Francis (1808-1898)
- Scope & Content:
- Drawings laid down in an album (ff.1-24) with paper covers inscribed in ink over pencil: ‘Unfinished Sepia Sketches R. Ganges, Calcutta & other parts of India by Col. G.F. White’. Album 54 by 33 cm. The collection can be dated to 1842 by the inscription on the frontispiece drawing. As in WD4304 some of the drawings shed light on D’Oyly’s ‘Views of Calcutta’ and on a group of ten very similar drawings in the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, attributed to D’Oyly (B 1977.18.1-12). The latter seem to cover similar subjects, identical in two cases, but on tinted paper resembling the tinted lithographs of the publication. f.1 Title-page, a ruined building by a river. Inscribed: ‘Indian Scraps. G.F.W. 1842’. Sepia wash; 22.5 by 37 cm. f.2 ‘Dhalghir, the Musjid between Benares & Secrole’. Pen and sepia ink; 38.5 by 24 cm. f.3 ‘Sunghee Ghaut. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil and sepia wash; 23 by 38 cm. Note: See also f.7. f.4 ‘Hascallee Ghaut. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil and sepia wash; 24 by 38 cm. f.5 A flooded underground chamber. ‘G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 22 by 38 cm. f.6 ‘On the Ganges R. Bengal. G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 23.5 by 38.5 cm. f.7 ‘Singhee Ghaut. Ganges R. G.F. White del.’ Sepia wash; 23.5 by 38.5 cm. f.8 ‘Maharajah Jeyt Singh House. Putting Ghaut Patna. Ganges R. G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 21.5 by 38 cm. f.9 ‘Meetums Musjid nr. Danish factory. Ganges R. G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 23.5 by 38.5 cm. f.10 ‘E. Indian Ganges Boat. G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 24 by 37.5 cm. f.11 ‘Boats laden with Indigo & Opium leaving Patna. Ganges R. G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 28.5 by 44.5 cm. f.12 ‘View from an old Bastion at the Fort of Patna. R. Ganges. G.F.W. del’, with pencil notes, ‘Chaprussee, cattle’. Pencil and sepia wash; 27.5 by 43.5 cm. f.13 ‘View from the Old Fort at Patna on the Ganges R. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil and sepia wash; 28.5 by 48.5 cm. f.14 ‘Chinese Ghaut in the Ganges R. G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 28 by 44.5 cm. f.15 Camp scene with elephants and camels. Inscribed: ‘Encampment at Chittra. Ganges R. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil and sepia ink; 28.5 by 44.5 cm. f.16 ‘Buharderee or Hall of Audience of Aurangzebe. A Ruin on the Ganges R. G.F.W. del’, and ‘Better cattle’. Pencil and sepia wash; 27.5 by 44.5 cm. f.17 The Black Pagoda in the Chitpore Road. Inscribed: ‘Distant View, Hindoo Mut. Chitpore Road. Calcutta. G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 28.5 by 44 cm. f.18 ‘Suburbs of Calcutta. G.F.W. del.’ Sepia wash; 28.5 by 44.5 cm. Note: See D’Oyly’s ‘Views of Calcutta’, plate 23, ‘Hindoo Mut in the Chitpore Bazaar’, the remains of the Black Pagoda. f.19 ‘Office of Sudder Bd. of Revenue frm. Kyd St. Calcutta. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil and sepia wash; 28 by 45 cm. Note: See D’Oyly’s ‘Views of Calcutta’, plate 11, ‘Office of the Sudder Board of Revenue from Kyd St’. The drawing in the Yale Center, B 1977.18.5, seems an intermediate stage. f.20 Calcutta street scene. Inscribed: ‘Tuntimeea Thanah near the Circular Road. Calcutta. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil and sepia ink; 28.5 by 44.5 cm. Note: See D’Oyly’s ‘Views of Calcutta’, plate 3, ‘View near the Circular Road’, which has differences to the foreground and composition. f.21 ‘View of Part of Chowringhee. Govt House &c. Calcutta. G.F.W. del.’ Pen and sepia ink and wash; 28.5 by 44.5 cm. Note: See D’Oyly’s ‘Views of Calcutta’, plate 21, ‘View of Part of Chowringhee’. The reference to Government House is incorrect and the second part of the inscription seems to have been added later. The inference is that it was added when the album was assembled in 1842. White was in the North-West Provinces and the Punjab before leaving India in 1846 and may not have seen Calcutta for many years. The drawing at Yale, B1977.18.7, seems intermediary between this drawing and the finished plate. f.22 ‘On the Ganges R. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil partly overdrawn in sepia ink; 28 by 45 cm. f.23 ‘Women Going to Well for Water. Bengal. India. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil and pen and sepia ink; 28.5 by 44.5 cm. f.24 ‘Ghaut on River Ganges. G.F.W. del.’ Pencil and pen and sepia ink; 30 by 46 cm.
