TAYLOR, PHILIP MEADOWS (1808-1876)
Meadows Taylor joined a commercial house in Bombay in 1823, and in 1824 entered the Hyderabad State Army to which he reverted after a period in the civil branch. He administered for the Nizam's government the principality of the young Raja of Shorapur from 1841 to 1853 and during this period was also ‘The Times’ Correspondent. In 1858 he became Commissioner of Shorapur until his retirement in 1860. He was the author of novels, including ‘Confessions of a thug’ (London, 1839), and an autobiography in which he often refers to his love of sketching. In 1837 he published ‘Sketches in the Deccan’ (London) illustrated from drawings made about the same time as WD115-121. For his self-portrait, see F651
