Ruined buildings, Nasik. Artist(s): Taylor, Philip Meadows (1808-1876)
- Scope & Content:
-
Pen-and-ink and wash drawing by Philip Meadows Taylor (1808-1876) of ruined buildings at Nasik in Maharashtra, dated 1838.
Inscribed on front in ink: ‘At Nassuk. M.T. 1838’; on back: ‘Purchased of Allen & Co. 21 Dec. 1857. Drawings West of Hindostan’; also pencil sketch.
Note: This sketch was made during Taylor's journey to Bombay in 1837 to 1838.
Taylor spent a large part of his career in India in the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad, in the role of soldier, adminstrator, Superintendant of Bazaars and Assistant Superintendant of Police for the southwestern districts of Hyderabad. He had suffered from a recurring fever for some time and on the 1st November 1837 was allowed three years furlough to recover his health. He and his wife were advised to journey via Egypt, to take advantage of the healthful benefits of its dry climate. He left Hyderabad for Bombay on the first leg of the journey to England. On the way he and his wife visited the Ajanta and Ellora caves. This drawing was probably made close to Taylor's departure from India as he set off by boat for Mocha, a port in the Red Sea, in January 1838.
