D’OYLY, Sir CHARLES, 7th Baronet (1781-1845)
Sir Charles D’Oyly went to India in 1797 and spent his first years in Calcutta, as assistant to the Registrar, Court of Appeal, and (1803) Keeper of the Records in the Governor General’s office. Collector of Dacca 1808-12; Collector of Government Customs and Town Duties in Calcutta 1812-20; Opium Agent, Patna 1820-31; Commercial Resident, Patna 1831-33; Senior Member of the Board of Customs, Salt, Opium, and of the Marine Board 1833-38. He spent a leave in South Africa (1832-33) and retired to Italy.
D’Oyly was a prolific artist and published many books with engravings and lithographs from his drawings: ‘The Costume and Customs of Modern India’ (1813); ‘The European in India’ (1813); ‘Antiquities of Dacca’ (1814-27); ‘Tom Raw, the Griffin’ (1828); ‘Behar Amateur Lithographic Scrap Book’ (1828-30); ‘The Feathered Game of Hindostan’ (1828); ‘Oriental Ornithology’ (1829); ‘Indian Sports’ (1829); ‘Costumes of India’ (1830); ‘Sketches of the New Road in a Journey from Calcutta to Gyah’ (1830); ‘Views of Calcutta and its Environs’ (posthumous, 1848).
His work was greatly admired by the European community in Bengal. When the river-boats moored for the night at Patna, many Europeans would disembark, visit him and see his drawings. Often they would beg a sketch for their autograph albums. WD486-91 are typical of the sketches he would improvise for friends; the album WD2060 is more representative of his work.
His zest affected other residents in Patna. He imported and ran a lithographic press with the help of local Indian artists. He encouraged his friends and neighbours to make sketches which he would then print and publish in periodical form as Behar Amateur Lithographic Scrap Book. He also published several of the books listed above.
Sir Charles D’Oyly helped fill the leisure time of the Patna Europeans by forming an art society. The minutes of one of their meeting records how ‘At a meeting of the Sons of Art at Patna, the 1st of July 1824, it was proposed and after some little discussion unanimously agreed that a Society be immediately formed to be entitled "The United Patna and Gaya Society, or Behar School of Athens", for the promotion of Arts and Sciences, and for the circulation of fun and merriment of all descriptions’.
D’Oyly made a great impact on Indian painters at Patna who under his guidance adapted their style to suit European demand.

WD2060, ff.1-83
80 drawings (83 folios) of views in Bengal and Bihar. Between January 1823 and May 1825.
---------------------
WD486-491
6 drawings originally in an album belonging to Isabella Dalzell, who wrote an introductory sonnet. The dates of the pictures in the album range from 1825 to 1832. The same album also contained WD492, 8 Indian architectural views (Add.Or.332-339) and 5 mica paintings (Add.Or.587-591).
Purchased 11 May 1953.
---------------------
WD3771-3772; WD4492.
Three unpublished drawings by D’Oyly, c. 1820, for his humorous poem ‘Tom Raw the Griffin’, London, 1828.
Purchased 1979 (3771-2) and 2002 (4492).
Note: The poem was published in 1828. D’Oyly dates his preface 1824, and mentions the prior existence of a set of drawings concerning the adventures of a griffin, which he was afterwards persuaded to write a poem around. This would date the drawings to about 1820, which accords with the costume style, uniforms, etc.
---------------------
WD4234, ff.1-25
Album of small water-colour views on the river Ganges 1820-30 painted on cards with embossed borders, various sizes, laid down. Each drawing has a contemporary inscription either on the card or the album page.
Purchased 1990.
---------------------
WD4350-4532
Three views of Calcutta, 1840.
All pencil heightened with white on tinted paper; each 27 by 43 cm.
Purchased 1993.
Note: Two of the group are dated 1840, which in view of the 'ad naturam' inscription is puzzling, as D’Oyly sailed for London via the Cape in March 1838, on board the ‘Thomas Grenville’.
---------------------
WD4400; WD4404-4406
Drawings and albums by D'Oyly from the Hastings Albums, including two albums containing 63 water-colours of Indian sports, and an album containing 28 water-colours of a trip along the Bhagirathi and Ganges Rivers, 1820.. D'Oyly was married at Cawnpore in 1815 to Lady Hastings' cousin Eliza Jane Ross.
Provenance: 1st Marquess of Hastings and his wife the Marchioness of Hastings, Countess of Loudoun; 2nd Marquis of Bute through his marriage to Lady Sophia Hastings in 1845, and by descent. Purchased 1995, with the assistance of the National Art Collections Fund, along with Add.Or.4698-5221 and WD4396-4399, WD4401-4403.
---------------------
WD4405-4406
Two albums containing 63 drawings in water-colour illustrating various types of big-game and other hunting, 1810-15.
Albums 14.5 by 23 cm. plus their original slip case covered in orange and blue marbled paper, with two pasted labels, one reading ‘Indian Sports’, the other torn and reading ‘To the Right Honble....The Countess of Lo....To the cur.....R. Phoenix.’ Album pages water-marked ‘1814.’
Note: The various hunting subjects are in groups and each group given a series of ‘plate’ numbers. Versions of many of the sporting subjects appear in later lithographs, for instance in ‘Indian Sports,’ Patna,1828, 1829, various scrapbooks etc., but not based exactly on the water-colours in these two albums. On the other hand, a set of tracings by D'Oyly of these subjects (WD4440(3)) found with other sporting drawings sent to John Landseer in London 1814-15 suggests that D’Oyly tried to have these particular drawings engraved or lithographed in London. These dates suggest that these two volumes of water-colours are a product of D'Oyly's years in Dacca and Calcutta 1810-15 and were subsequently presented to Lady Hastings, perhaps in 1815 on the occasion of his marriage to her cousin.
---------------------
WD4440
Three sets of Indian sporting drawings, tracings and engravings indicative of D’Oyly’s attempts to have his work published by John Landseer in London. Landseer engraved D’Oyly’s ‘Antiquities of Dacca’, whose plates appeared between 1814 and 1827, but no publication resulted from this collection. Instead, D’Oyly eventually published his own sets of Indian sports from his Behar Amateur Lithographic Press 1828-30. These lithographed sets differ both from WD4405-6, the albums of sporting drawings given to Lady Hastings, and to the sets catalogued here.
Purchased 1997.

WD4045-4087; F866
43 portrait drawings and an oil painting from the collections formed by James Munro Macnabb (1790-1860), who served in India from 1803 to1831. He was related to the D’Oylys through his marriage in 1820 to Jane Mary Campbell (1803-86), the second Lady D’Oyly’s cousin. Both ladies were also cousins to the Marchioness of Hastings, and the Macnabb wedding took place at Barrackpore House. Macnabb became a favourite of Lord Hastings, becoming in 1822 his Private Secretary. Practically his last official act before leaving India in 1823 was to appoint Macnabb Collector of Customs at Mirzapore. In 1828 he was transferred in the same capacity to Agra, and then to Benares, where he was promoted to Commissioner of Revenue and Circuit, his last post before leave in 1831 taken in Scotland, and then retirement. The Macnabbs and the D’Oylys remained in touch, and the childless Lady D’Oyly would seem to have left her cousin more Indian material after her death, as well as to her sister, Isabella Rose Gilbert.
Provenance: James Munro Macnabb; Macnabb (afterwards Macnab) family by descent. Purchased 1984 and (F866) 1992.
