- Title:
- Album of 80 drawings of views in Bengal and Bihar taken between January 1823 and May 1825.. Artist(s): D'Oyly, Sir Charles (1781-1845)
- Scope & Content:
- Album of 80 drawings (83 folios) of views in Bengal and Bihar taken between January 1823 and May 1825. The largest group (ff.2-39) consists of sketches made between 26 January and 27 February 1823 during a journey from Calcutta to Gaya (Bihar) along the ‘New Military Road’. This road passed through Manbhum district (Bihar) to Hazaribagh (Bihar) and through the hills to the N.W. to join the present Grand Trunk Road near Sherghati (Gaya district, Bihar). Begun in 1782, it had semaphore signalling towers built along it in the early years of the 19th century. 17 sketches are original drawings for lithographs in C. D’Oyly, ‘Sketches of the New Road in a Journey from Calcutta to Gyah’ (Calcutta, 1830). Another group (ff.57-78), drawn between 18 December 1824 and 2 January 1825, were clearly made during a Christmas tour to Gaya when D’Oyly visited his friends George Proctor Beauchamp and Christopher Webb Smith. The remaining miscellaneous sketches (ff.40-56 and ff.79, 80, 82) were made either at Patna, D’Oyly’s headquarters, or at near-by Hajipur in March and October 1824 and May 1825. In most cases the correct title of each sketch is inscribed on the preceding page, and the same title also appears on the back of the preceding sketch. It would seem that an original sketch-book was broken up and remounted in an album with brown pages, the inscriptions being copied on to the new pages. A few sketches appear to have been removed or lost during this process (e.g. original numbers 11, 29, 34, 35) and as a result new numbers were given. In some cases confusion has occurred because the old inscriptions no longer relate to the succeeding drawings. In the following entries, descriptions are based on the original inscriptions. Pen-and-ink; 10.25 by 14.25 ins. Purchased 6 March 1963. Note: These sketches appear to have passed from Sir Charles D’Oyly to his brother-in-law or sister-in-law, Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert and Lady Gilbert (née Isabella Rose Ross, sister of D’Oyly’s second wife, Eliza Jane Ross). To them, the collection Add.Or.2514-2524 also belonged. It was probably the Gilberts who remounted the sketches. It is significant that a sketch of their bungalow at Hazaribagh (see inscription on back of sketch f.28) has been removed. It may have been kept separately because of its special interest. A similar sketch-book by Sir Charles D’Oyly is in the Patna Museum. See Mildred and W.G. Archer, ‘Indian Painting for the British’, plate 4. Exhibited ff.28,48,52,72 Victoria and Albert Museum, London, India Observed, 26 April - 5 July 1982.
