Title:

Collection of Arabic works from the Senegambian region I

Scope & Content:

A volume of 34 separate works from West Africa bound together by the BL in 1905 after acquisition in 1903 from a Julius Bertram. Some watermarks bear a date of 1819. Most works concern fiqh, Islamic law and tawḥīd and were basic instructional texts for use in Islamic education. Most of the later texts are incomplete. The names of owners and copyists suggest these works were copied in the Senegambian region and specifically around the town of Touba, which could refer to several places, by members of the Jakhanke family of scholars and in particular the Suwaré family. Specifically, several works in the collection were owned by al-Ḥajj Gasama and Muhammad al-Amin Suwaré. There are several glosses in the Soninke language. This volume bears strong similarities to Or 4897.

Material: rough brown or white paper, usually with closely spaced chain lines and watermark lines every 3cm and either Royal Coat of Arms or Britannia on chariot in a crowned roundel watermarks.

Dimensions: approximately 230mm × 175mm though varies between works,

Foliation: British Museum foliation in pencil,

Script: Various central Sudanic hands

Ruling: sometimes masdara lines but usually no margin, lines per page varies.

Condition: some yellowing and brittle pages, many incomplete works.

Usage Statement: The West African manuscripts published in digitised format by the British Library are to the best of our knowledge not in copyright under the law of their countries of origin. While it is not possible to be certain about the origin of all the manuscripts, our research suggests that they come from Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal and/or The Gambia.

The British Library recognises broader interests in the cultural heritage which the West African manuscripts represent. They are often of a religious nature, and the Library has taken considerable care not to distort or alter the underlying material. We ask users also to show appropriate respect in reusing the digital images of the West African manuscripts, which should not be altered or reused in ways that might be derogatory or offensive to those communities for whom they are of special cultural importance.
