The archive comprises records of the Oral History Society (OHS), a UK charity founded in 1973 to further the development of the emerging oral history movement, by facilitating dialogue and exchange between practising oral historians; sharing good practice and developing standards for recording interviews; and providing advice to new practitioners.
The group which formed the early Committee of the Society was also involved in efforts to establish a national sound archive at the British Institute of Recorded Sound (BIRS). Many records in the first series (Add MS 89318/1 Foundation and Early Papers) detail these efforts. In those early files, reference to a Central Oral History Unit is made frequently; this was envisaged to be the repository that would be held at the BIRS. For various reasons, this central unit never made it into existence there. However, some years later, the National Sound Archive was established at the British Library which included oral histories in its collecting activities.
In the catalogue, the records have been described under two main groups: the OHS sub-fonds (encompassing the activities of the Trustee Committee and Regional Network); and the Oral History Journal sub-fonds. The archive features papers from members of the Trustee Committee and the Editorial Board of Oral History, including a large quantity of papers from Paul Thompson, OHS Founder-Editor. Also present are Committee and Sub-Committee meeting minutes; documentation and ephemera relating to conferences organised by the OHS; materials relating to the editing of Oral History, including editorial comments on article drafts and submissions; information about other publications produced by the Society; and papers relating to the Society’s Regional Network. Training activities, being a later function of the Society, are not widely represented here but do feature within parts of the archive from the mid-1990s onwards. For instance, see Add MS 89318/6/111 ('TRAINING.DOC') in series 6 (Born-digital Content) – this short paper from 1998 reflects on how the OHS could improve their training activities; and Add MS 89318/4/10 for minutes of a Regional Network meeting (28.09.01) which discuss the OHS’s training activities and plans at the time.
There is a discussion paper about the OHS Archive in file Add MS 89318/2/27 (Oral History Society: Minutes and Agendas, 2008), from Jun 2008 which sheds light on the Society's own view of its role and position within the oral history movement, and recognises that the Society archives provide a rich source of information relating to that movement.
The born-digital material in the archive was extracted from thirteen 3.5 inch floppy disks and totals 20 MB of data over 118 digital objects. Much of this born-digital material relates to the OHS Regional Network but also includes items connected with the journal, Oral History. The dates which the born-digital objects were 'Last Modified' by the creator have been specified in the Scope and Content field as this may differ from the creation date of the object. Digital content from the archive is available for viewing in the British Library’s Manuscripts Reading Room, in PDF and JPEG formats.

- The majority of items in the archive are in good condition.
- Custodial History:
- Before its arrival in the British Library Contemporary Archives and Manuscripts, most of the OHS Archive was kept in the British Library's secure storage at its Boston Spa site, and was overseen by Rob Perks, OHS Secretary. Other papers were held personally by key members of the Society's Trustee Committee, such as Paul Thompson, or in the Oral History Department at the British Library, with Rob Perks. The archive was transferred to the British Library Contemporary Archives and Manuscripts in Jun 2017.
