Scope & Content:

Encyclopaedia of technical terminology for self-teaching by the Mughal scholar Muḥammad Aʻlá ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Qāḍī Muḥammad Ḥāmid ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣābir al-Fārūqī al-Tahānawī (محمد أعلى بن علي بن القاضي محمد حامد بن محمد بن صابر الفاروقي التهانوي, d. after 1745). After a long introduction (vol. 1, ff. 2r-37r) the entries in the encyclopaedia are arranged alphabetically. This copy is defective at end and finishes abruptly at the beginning of Chapter ṣād, section mīm (باب الصاد فصل الميم, i.e. the section containing words that begin with ṣād and end with mīm, vol. 2, f. 568v). The majority of the entries are in Arabic, but some are in Persian.

The present copy is bound in two volumes with continuous foliation.

Vol. 1: Introduction (المقدمة) to Chapter ḥāʾ, section lām (باب الحاء فصل اللام, ff. 2r-264v);
Vol. 2: Chapter ḥāʾ, section lām (باب الحاء فصل اللام) to Chapter ṣād, section mīm (باب الصاد فصل الميم, ff. 265r-568v).

The historic front flyleaves of both volumes (foliated 1A-F to 1F-F in vol. 1 and 1A-B to 1G-B in vol. 2) contain calculations in Kaithi script, which are unrelated to the main text of the manuscript.
