- [Turkic Vocabulary]
- Scope & Content:
-
A vocabulary of Turkic words explained in Persian along with a grammatical sketch in the introduction, originally authored by Fazlullah Khan. The author describes himself as a cousin of Seyf Khan, an Emir of the reign of Aurangzeb, and a descendant of Chaku, an Emir of Timur. He compiled this work, he states, by order of the reigning sovereign, whom he designates as a namesake of the Prophet, for the Emperor's son.
The text consists of the following sections:
1v : Preface;
2r-5r : Verbal and other suffixes;
5v-12r : Verbs alphabetically arranged and spelled at full length, with Persian equivalents;
12v-49r : Nouns in alphabetical order, according to their first and last letters;
49v-52v : Classed vocabulary, comprising of numerals, names of parts of the body, names of animals, metals, fruits, the Turkic tribes, and the component parts of the army, in addition to other topics.
The work was edited by Munshi Abd ur-Rahim in 1825 with some alteration in the arrangement and spelling, along with the addition of new words. The editor appears to have added some non-standard or erroneous information.
Although the work does not have a title in the main text, the present copy does carry the following title on its cover: Risalat-i fazliye dar beyan-i lughat [illegible].
The text is copied in nastaliq.
This copy was likely produced in India in the 18th century.
