- Title:
- Tuhfe-yi Şahidi - تحفۀ شاهدی
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains a tabulated version of the Tuhfe-yi Şahidi, a well-known versified Persian-Ottoman Turkish vocabulary composed in 920 AH (1514-15 CE) by Şahidi, who died in 957 AH (1550-51 CE).
Mevlana Şahidi, or Şahidi Dede, whose given name was İbrahim, was born in Muğla in the province of Menteşe and entered, like his father Hodayi Dede, the Mevlevi order. He left, apart from the current work, a treatise on prosody and a poetical expansion of the Mesnevi of 600 lines entitled Gulshan-i Tavḥīd.
In this copy, the words are arranged in two columns, the Ottoman Turkish ones on the right and the Persian ones on the left of the page. A third column on the opposite page contains the Arabic equivalents. There are a few German and Latin glosses. It begins with the words sepas, nehabet, bi, etc. from the second beyit of the prologue. The last three pages contain the names of the various metres used in the Tuhfe, with the same Ottoman Turkish verses as examples of each as found in Harley MS 5454.
The manuscript was likely copied in the 18th century CE.
