Fi'l-Makalat-i Mevlana Gülşeni - في المقالات مولانا كلشنى
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains a collection of mesneviler by Şeyh İbrahim Gülşeni (died 940 AH/1533-34 CE). The titles of the following poems are based upon the table of contents (f 1r) which was added by an owner of the manuscript. Where there is a difference between this list and the heading of the poem, the difference has been indicated:
(I) ff 1v-22r : Saadname, a collection of versified Ahadith;
(II) ff 22v-58r : Makalat, an ethical and religious poem, illustrated by anecdotes in the manner of Sa'di. The date of composition is expressed by a chronogram as 864 AH (1459-60 CE);
(III) ff 59v-69v : Miracname, a poem on the Miraculous Journey of the Prophet Muhammad صلعم;
(IV) ff 69v-75v : In the table of contents, this is called Tazarruname, but the rubric reads Der münacat-i İbrahim Beyi;
(V) ff 75v-84v : Untitled in the text but in the table of contents it is called Risale fi'l-aruz. This is a Persian-Ottoman Turkish rhyming vocabulary each stanza of which is a different metre.
On f 75r there is a colophon in the same hand as the rest of the manuscript which has been crossed out. It has obviously been copied from an earlier manuscript as it states that the Divan was transcribed by Cafer İbn-i Halil in 900 AH (1494-95 CE). On the first folio, however, the formula tab serah (طاب ثراه) is used, which shows that Gülşeni was no longer alive when the manuscript was transcribed. A much more reliable indication of date is the record on f 74v of a birth by a former owner, dated 1080 AH (1669-70 CE). This may have been once one of the end papers.
Any disarrangement of the folios seems unlikely, as on f 75r, immediately after the colophon, the last poem commences, although it is possible that the copyist added it as an afterthought.
