Maps, nautical charts and related draft material mostly from the Amsterdam mapmaking office of Joan Blaeu, official cartographer for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Some of the maps, charts and notes are signed by assistants of Blaeu, namely Dionysius Paulusz. van Husum and Jan Alberts. All items are pasted down on the folios of the manuscript or are mounted on guards. Items 90-117 were removed from the manuscript in December 1933 and are bound together in Add MS 5027A / 90-117, which must be ordered separately.
Summary description of contents:
3. Arms of Batavia [Jakarta], in the Island of Java, conquered by the Dutch East India Company on 30 May 1619. Watercolour on vellum, with inscriptions in Dutch.
4. Arms of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) on vellum, by the same artist. Above is the monogram AOCV ['A' drawn above 'OC' with 'V' striking through both 'O' and 'C'].
5. Map of the port, city & fortification of ‘S. Phelipe de Puertovelo' [Portobelo] in South America, with the new city and fortification proposed to be made on the hill of St Christopher.
8. Plan and description of the Harbour of St. Jago, on the Island of Cuba [Santiago de Cuba], with a inscriptions in English.
9-10. Pen and ink map drawn over a bifolio, showing Bremen and Verden in Germany, compiled in the year 1653 by Johan a Fohlderbachen, from a geometrical survey made in 1651-62 by captain John Gorries, at the command of Count Konigsmark. The text inscribed on the map is in German, but on the verso there is an inscription in Dutch beginning with the words ‘perfecte caerte vant Hertogedom en t Sticht Bremen’.
12-24. Maps of the island of Robbeneiland in South Africa (dated 1652) and of the area around the Cape of Good Hope, with place names in Dutch. On the verso, most charts bear an inscription in a 17th century Dutch hand indicating these maps are prototype (‘patronen’) for larger charts.
25-47. Copies by Joan Blaeu’s assistants (Dionysus Paulusz. van Husum and Jan Alberts) of maps by Sebastian de Ruesta, of Saragoza (active 1654-60).
48-49. Bifolio map in pen and brown ink with place names in Portuguese, of the territories belonging to Abyssinia [Ethiopia].
50-61. City plans with place names in Portuguese. Cities include Damao (Daman), Chaul, Goa, Java, Cochin [Kochi].
64. Chart of the south west coast of Hudson’s bay [Hudson Bay], inscribed with the signature ‘Made by Thomas Moore’.
71. Map of the lake Abcoudermeer in North Holland, The Netherlands, signed in lower right margin 'C. Danckertsz 1628' and on the verso with the monogram 'D. P.'
72. A map of the plots of land in the Gravenstraat in Amsterdam, sold by the widow of Joan Blaeu.
73. Pen and brown ink map in bird's eye view of Batavia [Jakarta], in Java, with date and signature in Dutch written in a cartouche in the right lower corner 'D. P. 1650'.
74. View of St. Mark's Square in Venice drawn in Indian ink with some details in red chalk.
77-78. Plan of a mine in the Mendip district [Somerset].
82-83. Pen and ink architectural plan.
87-88. Pen and ink outline of architectural moulding.
89. Architectural plan of the elevation of a building with inscriptions in Spanish.
118-127. 'Kurze Beschreibung der Fuerstenburg'. A manuscript description in German of several German states, possibly intended for a topographical work. On the verso of 127 is the signature of Dionysius Paulusz. van Husum.
128. Manuscript description in German of the city of Basel.
129-130. Notes on some maps and nautical charts handwritten in Dutch and Latin, by Dionysius Paulusz., dated 1671.
132-136.'Nota op de groote Asiatische geschrevene caerte per Dominum Pauli H. Anno Domini 19 September 1671 Als mede van de Indische Zee op Wassende graden Anno 16.. bij mij uytgereckent,ontworpen en gemaeckt'. These are notes by Dionysius Paulusz. van Husum about a ‘large Asian Chart’ ('groote Asiatische Caerte').
137. 'J: van Loons Voorede op zyn Noordster'. Manuscript version, in Dutch, of the preface to Johannes van Loon’s atlas, Klaer lichtende Noort-star ofte Zee-atlas (Amsterdam, 1668).
139. A list of prices of globes, in Dutch.
140, 148, 149, 152, 156. Drafts of cartouches for a map of the 'wijtberoemde Amsterdammer en Hamburger Post Reysen'.
140-159. Small drawings or prints in proof stages, mostly of titles and cartouches for maps with text in Dutch.
160. A list, written in pen and brown ink (possibly in Hans Sloane’s hand) with place names and cross references to specific places illustrated in the maps and charts collected in the manuscript.
