- Title:
- Dutch navigational charts
- Scope & Content:
-
Navigational charts of different sizes mounted on guards, all executed on parchment, with place names inscribed in Dutch and / or Latin. The charts cover various parts of the eastern hemisphere, beginning with the coastal line of northern Europe, continuing with the coast of east Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, India, the islands of Java, Sumatra and Taiwan, Japan, the coast of China.
On the verso of several charts are annotations in a 17th century Dutch hand, some of which are signed with the monogram 'Dn P' and dated within the range 1663-1682. Some annotations refer to the state of the map (e.g. a first or second state, or an initial draft). Other annotations are verses in Latin and Dutch with a moralising tone or religious content. The charts in this volume have been attributed to Paulus Dionysiusz. van Husum, whose abbreviated signature 'Dn P' is visible on the verso of some charts. Van Husum was an assistant of the Amsterdam cartographer Joan Blaeu. Other notes and charts by Van Husum are in Add MS 5027 A.
Part of this description is based on research published by Kees Zandvliet, "Mapping the Dutch world overseas in the seventeenth century", pp. 1433-1462 in: David Woodward, ed., 'The History of Cartography', Volume 3 (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1997).
