Established in 1891, the British Library’s Philatelic Collections have grown into the United Kingdom’s national philatelic collection. Global in scope it currently comprises more than eighty major collections, totalling in excess of eight and a half-million collection items representing almost every aspect of philately, philatelic literature, postal history and the security printing industry.
Content across the collections is incredibly diverse including: printing presses, dies, plates, dandy rolls, postage stamps, revenue stamps, telegraph stamps, poster stamps, Cinderella stamps, postal stationery, pre-production artwork, essays, proofs, covers, entires, specimen issues, airmails, paper money, postal orders and some postal history.

Established in 1891 following the bequest of Thomas Keay Tapling's worldwide collection of postage stamps, revenue stamps and postal stationery to the Department of Printing Books in the British Museum Library. Successive donations, bequests and transfers of official government archives followed.
The collection was officially transferred to the British Library upon its formation in 1973, eventually moving across to the British Library's St Pancras site in 1997. Additional material is continually accessioned into the collection.
