Papers of William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne
General and political correspondence of William Petty, 2nd Earl Shelburne, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne (1784), originally at Bowood House, Calne, co. Wilts.
Much of the correspondence relates to the high politics of this period during which Shelburne was a member of the House of Lords, President of the Board of Trade, Secretary for the Southern Department and First Lord of the Treasury. He also maintained wide circle of correspondents that reflected his many economic, political, scientific, antiquarian and artistic interests, and Bowood House attracted many leading figures of the day, including Jeremy Bentham, Benjamin Franklin and Joseph Priestley. Other important series of correspondence include that with his son, Lord Henry Petty, concerning his education in Edinburgh, and that with Samuel Garbett, the manufacturer.

A MS. list, ‘Catalogue of the Topham Charters and Lansdowne Rolls and Charters’, is kept in the Manuscripts Reading Room (shelfmark 29d).
