The Lansdowne Manuscripts (the collection of historical manuscripts formed by William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, now BL Lansdowne MSS 1-1245), the Petty Papers (the papers of Sir William Petty (b. 1623, d. 1687), now BL Add MS 72850-72908) and the Shelburne Papers (the political papers of William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, calendared by the Historical Manuscripts Commission in 1872-77 and now in the William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan).
Some papers from the present archive, chiefly family correspondence, still remain at Bowood House; enquiries should be addressed to the Archivist, Bowood Estate Office, Bowood, Calne, Wiltshire.
Some papers extracted from the archive were sold at Christie’s on 12 October 1994 (sale of ‘Important Autograph Letters from the Historical Archives at Bowood House’) and are now widely scattered in public and private collections, though copies of some exported manuscripts have been deposited in the British Library and may be found among the Reserved Photocopies (RP). The papers sold in 1994 included three major sub-sections of the Bowood Papers which may be regarded as separate archives in their own right: the papers of George Keith Elphinstone, Viscount Keith (b. 1746, d. 1823), lot 34 in the 1994 sale, now BL Add MS 86493-86546, the papers of Margaret Mercer Elphinstone, Countess de Flahault de la Billardrie (1788-1867), lot 16 in the 1994 sale, now BL Add MS 86849-86877, and the papers of Auguste Charles Joseph, Count de Flahault de la Billardrie (b. 1785, d. 1870), lot 89 in the 1994 sale, now in the Centre Historique des Archives Nationales, Paris. These entered the Bowood archive following the marriage of Emily Jane Mercer Elphinstone de Flahault (b. 1819, d. 1895) to Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 4th Marquess of Lansdowne. A further significant section of the Bowood Papers, comprising 64 volumes of the correspondence and papers of Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, as Viceroy of India, is now in the India Office Private Papers, BL MSS Eur D558.
