Marlborough Papers
Althorp Papers. Vols. lxxxviii-cxxxv. Papers of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, his wife Sarah, and the latter's executors; 1682-1772. The principal Marlborough archive forms part of the Blenheim Papers (now Add. MSS. 61101-61710). This fragment of it derives chiefly from the Hon. John Spencer's position as heir of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, though a few items were clearly added by purchase at a much later date. For the legal opinion of 1781 which separated the main part of the Marlborough archive from the papers inherited by the Spencers, see F.
