Papers of Charlotte, Lady Canning
- Scope & Content:
-
The collection consists of the personal papers of Charlotte Canning, including diaries and journals kept on her European travels and while carrying out royal duties as Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria, and whilst in India with her husband Charles Canning, as Governor General and later Viceroy. Also includes series of correspondence regarding the founding of the Establishment for Gentlewomen during Illness, of which Charlotte Canning was a patron, and nursing in the Crimea, correspondence with Queen Victoria, and correspondence from her time in India. There is also a substantial series of family correspondence, which not only includes Charlotte Canning's correspondence, but the papers of her mother, Lady Stuart de Rothesay. These papers seem to have originated at the family home at Highcliffe, and have been amalgamated with Charlotte Canning's papers, which were returned from India with Charles Canning after her death.
The collection includes family papers dating from 1778, and administrative papers dating from the 1960s, but primarily the collection dates from the 1840s to the 1860s.
The collection consists of the following series:
Mss Eur F699/2/1: Family Correspondence and Papers: These include the papers of Charlotte Canning's mother, Lady Stuart de Rothesay; Charlotte Canning's correspondence with various family members, and miscellaneous papers relating to Charlotte Canning's family.
Mss Eur F699/2/2: Journals: Charlotte Canning's journals, both European from tours with Charles Canning and with Queen Victoria, and relating to India. India Journals include expanded copies of her original journals, which were sent to her family in England. Almost all of her original diaries suffered damage by fire in December 1859.
Mss Eur F699/2/3: Papers relating to Nursing & the Crimean War: Includes papers relating to the Establishment for Gentlewomen during Illness, correspondence from Florence Nightingale and others relating to the Crimea, including substantial correspondence between Charlotte Canning and the War Office in relation to practical arrangements for sending nurses.
Mss Eur F699/2/4: Correspondence with Queen Victoria and other members of the Royal Family: Includes copies of letters from Charlotte Canning to the Queen while in India, as well as letters from the Queen to Charlotte Canning from the 1840s onwards.
Mss Eur F699/2/5: India Correspondence: Includes personal correspondence written to Charlotte Canning, primarily from individuals in India, in addition to letters formally registered by the Private Secretary's Office. Also includes material collected by Charlotte Canning in relation to the Indian Mutiny, as well as material relating to charity work, education and nursing in India.
Mss Eur F699/2/6: Miscellaneous Papers: Includes correspondence written to Charlotte Canning prior to her departure from India, and material accompanying Charlotte Canning's papers.
A series of correspondence from Charlotte Canning sent to her husband Charles Canning while on tour in India, including trips to Simla, the Himalayas and Darjeeling, 1858-1861, has been transferred from her papers to the personal papers of Charles Canning (Mss Eur F699/1/4/9).
