Charlotte Canning was Chair of the Committee for the Establishment for Gentlewomen During Illness (also known as the Institution for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen During Illness), which appointed Florence Nightingale as Superintendent to their premises at Harley Street in 1853. Charlotte Canning subsequently interviewed prospective nurses wanting to work in the Crimea, and she worked extensively with the War Office to make arrangements for their travel, pay, clothing etc.
Papers are have been divided into the following areas:

Mss Eur F699/2/3/2-4: Extracted papers relating to Florence Nightingale, including correspondence relating to Mary Stanley, and from Charles & Selina Bracebridge, 1855-1858

Mss Eur F699/2/3/7-11: Papers relating to the recruitment, appointment organisation & deployment of nurses to the Crimea, 1855. These papers retain their original arrangement within files.
