This section (3v-37v) contains a commentary in Ottoman Turkish on the first eighteen beyitler of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi’s (died 672 AH/1273 CE) classic Mesnevi-i ma‘nevi. It also includes explanations of some difficult points and words from elsewhere in the Mesnevi. The commentary was authored by İsmail Rusuhi Ankaravi (died 1041 AH/1631 CE), who was Şeyh of the Galata Mevlevîhânesi for the final twenty-one years of his life.
Ankaravi was known as ‘Hazret-i Şarih’ based on his widely-respected commentary of the entirety of the Mesnevi, titled Mecmuatü’l-letaif ve matmuretü’l-maarif (Or 13197, Or 14077, Harley MS 5490 (II)). The latter work incorporated the Fatihü’l-ebyat, as well as another of Ankaravi’s previously authored works: the Cami‘ü’l-ayat, which explains the Qur’anic verses and Hadith quoted in the Mesnevi.
In the present manuscript, Ottoman Turkish translations of some quotations in Arabic have been added by the copyist in panels in the margins.
The illuminated heading on 3v and margin illumination on 3v-4r are of fair quality.
Though undated, this copy is likely from around 1032 AH/1623 CE, based on the date given in the second text of the manuscript (f 138r), which appears to be in the same hand.
