Royal Literary Fund - Anniversary Dinner Documents

Scope & Content:

These boxes contain the records of the Anniversary Dinners of the Literary Fund, held every year from 1793 until 1939, with the exception of the years 1915-1919, when the dinners were halted due to the First World War. The materials that survive vary from year to year, but often include correspondence relating to the dinner, administrative documents, and ephemera such as menus, tickets, table plans and invitations. Generally, the early records are quite sparse and the most comprehensive records are those from the middle of the nineteenth century, although there are also exceptionally detailed records for the centenary dinner of 1890. At the time of cataloguing (2012-13) no records could be located for the years 1908-1914 and 1920. For these years (as for others) the details of the dinners given in the Annual Reports (Loan 96 RLF 3) can provide an invaluable supplement to these papers.

These records were reboxed in 2013 as most of their original boxes had collapsed. The original arrangement was maintained and one box (for 1858-1859) kept as an example of the old storage format (catalogued as Loan 96 RLF 4/31). Two boxes of letters accepting and declining invitations for the dinners of 1924 and 1935, which were not included in the existing arrangement, have been placed at the end of the run (Loan 96 RLF 4/32 and Loan 96 RLF 4/33).
