Correspondence

Althorp Papers. Vols. mlxix-mxcii. Correspondence; 1823-1875, n.d. Most of the autograph letters of Lord Althorp appear to be originals, presumably returned by the recipients or their families. Most of the copies of his letters are by his private secretary from 1830-1833, Henry Wickham; a few are in the hand of his later private secretary, Thomas Drummond (1833-1834). The groups of letters in first eight volumes have been separated from the main body of correspondence on account of their size or the importance of the correspondent in relation to Althorp's political career, and two printed volumes are included (see 76376 A, B. Many letters have annotations made by a more recent member of the Spencer family, probably the 7th Earl Spencer, giving dates, or approximate dates, and other information. Some letters relate to papers in Section C (Administrative Papers of the Treasury and the Exchequer). A few have been printed in Memoir of John Charles, Viscount Althorp, Third Earl Spencer, by Sir Denis le Marchant, 1876.
