Althorp Papers. Vols. mlxxvii-mxcii. General correspondence chronologically arranged; 1806-1845, n.d. Partly copies. Partly drafts. Most of the copies of Lord Althorp's letters are by his private secretaries, Henry Wickham (1830-1833) and Thomas Drummond (1833-1834). A few copies of Althorp's letters are autograph and a few other letters in Lord Althorp's hand appear to be originals, presumably returned by the recipients or their families. Many letters have annotations made by a more recent member of the Spencer family, probably the 7th Earl Spencer, giving dates, or approximate dates, and other information. This series consists of Lord Althorp's correspondence with various politicians, particularly colleagues in the whig governments of 1830-1834, members of his family, employees, friends and members of the public. A few letters in which Lord Althorp is neither the author nor the recipient were probably enclosed with covering letters which have been lost. Some of the political correspondence relates to the papers in Section C (Administrative Papers of the Treasury). There are also a few miscellaneous petitions and memorials.
