A. Correspondence
82963-82983. Lamb Papers (Series II). Vols. i-xxi. Correspondence of the Lamb family’s agents, the Foxes, and their solicitor, Charles Cookney; 1750-1869. The volumes contain letters from, and copy letters to, members of the Lamb family. The correspondence is primarily concerned with the management of the estates, activities of family members and local politics. To a lesser extent the letters refer to national issues, in particular the state of agriculture, manufacturing industry, mining and trade, and also to the Volunteer movement and disturbances of the peace, but generally in relation to the family’s estates and the East Midlands. The volumes contain labels referring to a former structure but it has not been possible to recreate this arrangement. Add. 82963-82982 contain letters to the land agents commencing with William Fox, who was succeeded on his death in 1788 by his nephew, Henry Fox, and from 1840 by Frederick Francis Fox. 82983 contains the correspondence of Charles Cookney. Correspondence regarding estate administration is also to be found in Add. MS. 82984.
