82963-83076. Papers of the Lamb family of Melbourne Hall, co. Derby; 1680s-1875. Partly copies and drafts. Partly French and Italian. The archive contains the records of Sir Matthew Lamb (b.1705?, d.1768), his son, Peniston, (b.1740, d.1828), grandson, William, first Viscount Melbourne (b.1779, d.1848), and William’s younger siblings: Frederick, third Viscount Melbourne and Baron Beauvale (b.1782, d.1853), George (b.1784, d.1834), and Emily, Countess Cowper and later Viscountess Palmerston (b.1787, d.1869). Some records of more distant family members are also included.

The greater part of the archive is concerned with the administration of the Melbourne estates, of which the Lambs took possession through the marriage of Matthew Lamb to Charlotte Coke in 1740. The papers continue the record of the occupation of Melbourne Hall from the Coke Papers Series III (Add. MS. 69936-69998). The management of the family estates was undertaken by three generations of the Fox family, whose records comprise the bulk of the correspondence section. Besides documents resulting from the business, political and landed interests of the family (sections A - E) the archive contains the literary papers of George Lamb, writer and committee member of the Drury Lane theatre (section F).

The archive was purchased from the Melbourne Heritage Trust by private treaty through Sotheby’s in June 1996. The documents bear references given by Derbyshire Record Office similar to those that appear on the Coke papers. These references have been given below in parentheses after the catalogue descriptions. Many of the volumes contain slips and wrappers formerly labelling bundles of documents. Most of these had been separated from the documents they originally referred to before their transfer to the British Library and it has not been possible to reconstruct the original bundles.
