ETHEL SMYTH COLLECTION. Vols. I-IV. 'Fantasio': comic opera in two acts based on the play by Alfred de Musset; 1892 - 1894, with later resisions. The libretto, in German, was written by the composer in collaboration with Henry Bennet Brewster (C. St John, op. cit., pp. 83, 90). First performed at Weimar, 20 May 1898 (C. St John, op. cit., p. 93; A. Loewenberg, Annals of Opera, Geneva, 1955, i, col. 121O, gives the date as 24 May) and revived at Karlsruhe, 10 Feb. 1901. Published, in vocal score, by the composer, Leipzig, [1899]. For an account of the composer's campaign for the Weimar and Karlsruhe performances see her autobiography, What Happened Next, 1940, pp. 8-174 passim. About 1917 she destroyed a 'mountain of "material"' relating to 'Fantasio' (What Happened Next, p. 175), having selected two volumes of full score for preservation (presumably Add.
