Add MS 45934-45935

Vols. I, II (ff. i + 181, ii + 206). Full score of Acts I and II, probably the version used for the first performance at Weimar. This differs in many respects from the full score of the Karlsruhe version, of which only Act I survives (Add. MS. 45937); the latter agrees closely with the printed edition. The chief differences are:-(1) The 'Vorspiel' of Add. MS. 45934, ff. 2-14, has been replaced by a new Overture in the printed and Karlsruhe versions;-(2) The end of Act I is considerably cut in the later versions and part of the material transferred to the beginning of Act II;-(3) The libretto was amended throughout for the Karlsruhe version; the music was revised in detail (cf. 45934, ff. 75b-79 and printed score, pp. 52-54; 45937, ff. 149b-154), while some passages were considerably rewritten (cf. Fantasio's song, 45934, ff. 138-143b, and printed score, pp. 90-93; 45937, ff. 260-271b). Many more revisions were made to Act I than to Act II (judging from the printed score of the latter).
