WHITWORTH PAPERS. Vols. XIV., XV. Correspondence of C. Whitworth, as Minister at the Diet at Augsburg and Ratisbon; 1 July, 1714-10 Aug. 1716. It had been first intended that Whitworth should go to Baden, where terms of Peace were being arranged between France and the Empire. His credentials, however, 15 July, 1714 (f. 6), were to Augsburg, whither he went in August, but, the Diet being transferred to Ratisbon, his dispatches from 17 Sept. (N.S.), 1714, are dated from that place. The chief subjects discussed at the Diet were the religious dissensions between the Catholic and Protestant States, and the apportionment of the war debts among the States consequent on the Treaty of Baden, etc. The correspondence in 1715-1716 also deals with the designs and movements of James Stuart, the Pretender. Among Whitworth's correspondents are Henry Bromley, Lord Bolingbroke, and (after the accession of George I.) Charles Townshend, Viscount Townshend, Secretaries of State, Horace Walpole and George Tilson, Under-Secretaries, the Duke of Marlborough and Adam Cardonnel. Two volumes.
