WHITWORTH PAPERS. Vols. XVII.-XXV. Correspondence of C. Whitworth, as Envoy Extraordinary, etc., at the Hague during the absence of Gen. William Cadogan, Ambassador Extraordinary; 11 Mar. 1716/7-10 May (N.S.), 1719. He was sent to the Hague (without being recalled from Berlin) owing to the discovery of Swedish designs in aid of the Pretender's invasion of Scotland. During his stay Lord Cadogan twice returned to his post (in Sept. 1717, and in May, 1718-Jan. 1719), and the two then acted jointly. In addition to the Swedish affair, other principal subjects of the correspondence are: (a) the adjustment of difficulties in the execution of the Barrier Treaty (15 Nov. 1715), which were settled by a new convention signed 21 Nov. 1718;-
(b) the negotiations of [James Stanhope] Earl Stanhope, and [John Dalrymple] Earl of Stair, at Paris, which ended in the Quadruple Alliance;-(c) the designs of Philip V. of Spain and Card. Alberoni for the recovery of Sicily, etc., frustrated by the defeat of the Spanish fleet by Adm. Sir George Byng [31 July, 1718];-(d) the various Spanish projects in favour of the Pretender, 1718-1719. Whitworth's correspondents are Earl Stanhope, Secretary of State and (1718) Envoy Extraordinary at Paris, the Earl of Sunderland, and James Craggs, Jun., Secretaries of State, the Earl of Stair, Ambasador at Paris, [Johann Kaspar von] Bothmer, Hanoverian Prime Minister, Resident in London, Lord Cadogan, and others. Nine volumes.
