WHITWORTH PAPERS. Vols. XXVI.-XLII. Correspondence of C. Whitworth [cr. Baron Whitworth 9 Jan. 1721] during his negotiations at the Prussian Court; 1719-1722. He arrived at Berlin from the Hague 6/17, May, 1719, the object of his embassy being to make "a nearer Allyance of Friendship and Union" [v. Lord Stanhope's letter 17 Apr. (0.S.), 1719]. He visited the Hague in June-Nov. 1720, and in July-Nov. 1721, and finally left Berlin for England in the beginning of June, 1722, having been appointed Joint-Plenipotentiary with Lord Polwarth at the Congress of Cambray. His departure, however, for the latter place was delayed by his being ordered to stay in Paris (where he arrived on 31 July) on his way, to discuss preliminaries with Sir Luke Schaub, British Ambassador, Cardinal Dubois, Minister of State, and Comte de Morville, who was to represent France at Cambray. His last letter from Paris is dated 19/30 September. Among his correspondents are George I. as Elector, and Frederick William, King of Prussia, Earl Stanhope, James Craggs, and Viscount Townshend, Secretaries of State, [John Carteret, Baron] Carteret, Envoy to Sweden and in 1721 Secretary of State, Count Bothmer, [Andreas Gottlieb von] Bernstorff, lst Minister of Hanover, [Heinrich Rüdiger von] Ilgen, Prussian Foreign Minister, [Ermengard von der Schulenburg], Duchess of Kendal, Sir Luke Schaub, [Alexander Hume-Campbell, Baron] Polwarth, and the Regents of Hanover, etc. Seventeen volumes. At the end (f. 211) of the last volume is a treatise, in German, on Military Tactics, with coloured plans, written by "Baron von Pirch, Capitaine des Dragons à la suite de Legion Corse," and sent to the "Marquis de Monteynard" [? Louis François de Monteynard, Marquis de Monteynard, born 1716].
