LAYARD PAPERS. Vols. XXXIX-XLI. Correspondence of Sir A. H. Layard with [Edward Robert Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st] Earl of Lytton, Minister at Lisbon 1875, Viceroy of India 1876-1880, Ambassador in Paris 1887-1891 ; 1864-1891. Lytton's letters are autograph ; Layard's, type-written copies. A letter from the Viceroy's private secretary Lt.-Col. Owen Tudor Burne. is included in 38969 (f. 129). At the end of 38970 there is a draft of a letter from Layard to Lady Constance Lytton with an appreciation of her father, followed by a list of letters from Lytton to Layard (all of which are included in these volumes), sent to her sister, Lady Elizabeth Balfour, who printed part of the letter of 24 Dec. 1878 in her Personal and Literary Letters, 1906, ii, p. 135. Further correspondence, etc., of Layard with Lytton, the public use of which is restricted by the India Office, is contained in Add. MS. 39164 (see below). Quarto and (38970) small quarto.
