THE LAYARD PAPERS. CORRESPONDENCE and papers, private and official, of Sir Austen Henry Layard, P.C., G.C.B., D.C.L., the discoverer of Nineveh (b. 1817, d. 1894). From 1842 to 1845 he was unofficially employed on diplomatic missions by Sir S. Canning, afterw. (1852) Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe, British Ambassador at Constantinople; he was an unpaid attaché at the Embassy 1847-1849, and a paid attaché 1849-1852. His excavations in Assyria were begun in Oct. 1845 for Lord Stratford and continued in 1846 and 1847 for the Trustees of the British Museum, for whom he undertook further excavations in 1849-1851. Returning to England he was Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Feb.-Aug. 1852, and again Aug. 1861-July 1866, and First Commissioner of Works Dec. 1868-Oct. 1869. Resuming diplomacy, he was Minister at Madrid 1869-1877, and Ambassador at Constantinople 1877-1880. He was M.P. for Aylesbury 1852-1857, and for Southwark 1860- 1870. He was Lord Rector of Marischal College, Aberdeen, 1855- 1857 ; one of the Committee for Sculpture, etc. in the International Exhibition, 1862; a Royal Commissioner on Westminster Abbey, 1890. He was elected a Trustee of the National Gallery, 1866, and Hon. Foreign Secretary to the Royal Academy of Arts, 1890.
