OXENDEN PAPERS. Vols. XXII. Letter-books of Sir G. Oxenden, containing copies of letters sent out by him from Surat arranged in a very rough chronological order. Vols. X, XII have indexes of recipients of letters. Many of the letters provide the other side of the correspondence found in the rest of the collection. Vol. XI is composed of two letter-books:-(a) March 1663-29 Apr. 1665. f. 1; (b) 25 Nov. 1664-6 Apr. 1665. f. 71. A note in Vol. XII, f. 2, states that it was copied by Henry Oxenden, who was Sir G. Oxenden's cousin. On f. 116 b of Vol. XI is a letter to the satirist, Samuel Butler, 6 Mar. 166.4/5, thanking him for the gift of his Hudibras (1st part, publ. 1663), printed by R. Quintana, Mod. Lang. Notes, xlviii (1933), p. 5, and in Vols. XI, f. 141 b; XII, f. 91, are letters to Charles II.
