Title:

OXENDEN PAPERS. Original correspondence, letterbooks and accompt-book of Sir George Oxenden, Knt. (1620-1669), President of the East India Company at Surat 1662-1669, and 1st Governor of Bombay under the E. India Co. 1668-July 1669. The papers, which were used by Sir W. Foster in The English Factories in India, 1661-64, are mainly of an official or business nature, but there is a certain amount of private correspondence with his family and friends (for further correspondence of the Oxenden family cf. Add. MSS. 27999-28005). Some of the originals of the letters are among the papers at the India Office. The names of the correspondents, among whom are Charles II, Samuel Butler, author of Hudibras, numerous members of the E. India Co. in England and India and several Portuguese merchants, are given in the Index. Add. MSS. 40702-40705, 40707-40713 have contemporary Indian bindings of red leather, in Add. MSS. 40703, 40705, 40709, 40711 with blind stamps. Eighteen volumes.
