VERNON PAPERS. Vols. I-VI. Correspondence of James Vernon (d. 1727), Secretary of State (1697-1702), and previously Private Secretary to Charles Talbot, Duke of Shrewsbury (1688 and 1694), and Secretary to the Lords Justices (1694-1697). His letters to the Duke of Shrewsbury were published by G. P. R. James, Letters illustrative of the Reign of William III, 3 vols., 1841. Among his other correspondents the chief are:-the King, William Blathwayt, Secretary-at-War, Matthew Prior, Secretary of Embassy at Paris, Edward Villiers, Earl of Jersey, ambassador at Paris, and Laurence Hyde, Earl of Rochester, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Vernon's out-going letters are of course either drafts or copies. Volume VI contains also papers and correspondence of Vernon's two sons, James Vernon, junior (d. 1756), Commissioner of Excise, etc., and Adm. Edward Vernon (d. 1757), who signs a number of Council of War resolutions as Commander in the West Indies, 1741 (ff. 94-125). Six volumes, 1688-1754, viz.:-
