- Title:
- William Dacres Adams: Letters from Lady Hester Stanhope and Other Members of the Stanhope Family
- Scope & Content:
-
Lady Stanhope's letters to Adams (and also to Pitt) are largely from 1805-1806. There is a single letter from Lady Stanhope to Adams from the Lebanon (1817, conveyed by Dr. Meryon) and a subsequent letter (1843) from Dr. Meryon to Adams.
The letters to Adams from Lady Stanhope's half-brothers Charles and James refer to Pitt's declining health, and to the Peninsular War (Charles Banks Stanhope was killed at the Battle of Corunna). Letters from Philip Henry Stanhope (which include a letter to Pitt) refer to his difficult relationship with his father and to the Stanhope family estate.
