The file includes two letters (4 and 5) from Charles Stanhope to Adams (items 4 and 5). Very few of the letters from Lady Stanhope to Adams are properly dated, and they are not presented in strict chronology (e.g. letters 4-10 relate to Pitt's final days, January 1806, but in the letters immediately following Pitt is still alive). One letter (23) is from Lady Stanhope to Pitt.
- 1-1(i). [Walmer Castle], 'Sunday', [1805], Lady Stanhope to Adams.
- 2. 'Wednesday' [28 August 1805], Lady Stanhope to Adams. 'I am extremely anxious to hear how the King bore the death of the Duke of Gloucester'.
- 3. 'Sunday', Lady Stanhope to Adams. Anxious to receive 'an account of Mr. Pitt's health'. (Corner of letter missing, slight loss of text.)
- 4. No date [1806], Charles Stanhope to Adams. 'The Physicians have just finished their consultation and agree that the symptoms are better this evening'.
- 5. No date [1806], Charles Stanhope to [Adams]. 'The consultation is just over: Mr. Pitt is much worse, and in great danger.'
- 6. [?1 January 1806], Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. Sir Walter (physician) thinks Pitt should go to Bath 'instead of talking politics in London'.
- 7. [?17 January 1806], Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. 'Sir Walter writes to Charles & all he can say is I believe that Mr. P. is no worse'.
- 8. [20 January 1806], Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. 'Mr. P. is worse today ... has eaten nothing but what has come up'. Sir Walter to remain overnight. 'I send two boxes, let Ld M. take out what papers he may want & return them this evening.'
- 9. 'Tuesday morning' [21 January 1806], Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. 'I cannot say that I feel very happy this morning but however they seem to think he is about the same.'
- 10-10(i). South Hill, [26 January 1806], Lady Stanhope to Adams. Concern for the welfare of Pitt's servants (except Griffiths) following his death.
- 11. Walmer Castle, 26 April [?1805], Lady Stanhope to Adams. Out of date order (Pitt alive).
- 12. 'Tuesday 3 o'clock' [?early January 1806]. Brief note: 'I am glad all has turned out well in the House. The Physicians think Mr. P. no better alas.'
- 13. 'Thursday evening' (no date), Lady Stanhope to Adams. 'I shall be happy to see you on Saturday at dinner, for it is now fixed that I dine at Blackheath tomorrow to meet the Princess Charlotte.'
- 14. 'Sunday' (no date), Lady Stanhope to Adams. 'Let me hear from you in abt a week at Plymouth Dock & tell me how he [?Pitt] looks & how he bore his journey. We set off in grand state on the 9th ... I like Dr. M. extremely and the Princess expressed herself much pleased with his manner at Pomeroy Castle.'
- 15. 'Friday 5 o'clock' (no date), Lady Stanhope to Adams.
- 16. 'Monday' (no date) [?1805], Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. 'I hope to God that Mr. P. will be able to go through the fatigue of the debate....'
- 17. Walmer Castle, 'Sunday' (no date), Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. 'The Chalk pit will be very pretty in time. I take great pleasure in attending to the planting of it.'
- 18-18(i). [Walmer Castle], 'Wednesday' (no date), Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. Letter beginning: 'Will you tell Mr. Pitt that I & Griffiths have considered what is the best thing to do with the two hacks [horses] ... I have decided to turn them out in the low grounds near Sandwich....'
- 19. [Walmer Castle], 'Sunday' (no date), Lady Stanhope to Adams. Further reference to the two 'hacks'. 'How happy the officer's wives will be at the news of today!'
- 20. 'Wednesday' (no date), Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. Concerned for Pitt's health. Refers to Deal boatmen ('smugglers') saving the lives of the crew of a wrecked ship.
- 21. 'Sunday' (no date), [Lady Stanhope] to [Adams].
- 22. [Walmer Castle], 'Sunday' (no date), [Lady Stanhope] to [Adams]. She is cultivating some barren ground behind the Castle.
- 23. Upper Seymour Street, 'Monday morning' (no date), Lady Stanhope to Pitt, encouraging him to buy a carriage.
- 24. 'Sunday morning' (no date), Lady Stanhope to Adams. Referring to a personal meeting: 'he did not make me a single reproach, but said he had never ceased to love me, & this was to be considered a compleat reconciliation'.
- 25-25(i). Cuffnells, 'Wednesday' (no date), [Lady Stanhope] to [Adams]. 'Yesterday I sailed to the Isle of Wight & thro the Fleet at Spithead....' Refers to Capt. Stewart. She is taking a look at the Forest tomorrow and departs on Friday to South Hill. She thinks that Pitt looks better but hopes he will go to Bath and not stay too long at Walmer.
- 26. 'May 3rd' (year not indicated), [Lady Stanhope] to Adams. A quatrain (by Lady Stanhope?) that alludes to Thomas Gray, 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard'.
- 27. 'Wednesday night' (no date), [Lady Stanhope] to [Adams].
- 28. 'Friday' (no date), Lady Stanhope to [Adams].
- 29. Downing Street, 'Wednesday evening' (year not indicated), Lady Stanhope to [Adams]. Congratulates Adams, and refers to calling on Mrs Adams.
