- Title:
- Letters and enclosures received from Bandar 'Abbas (Gombroon) and Basra.
- Scope & Content:
- These letters were originally in a packet of loose papers, numbered 19, along with letters and enclosures, etc, from Mocha in the Red Sea, 1710-1815 (see G/17). At some stage the letters, etc, in this packet were assigned numbers in red ink, from 1-2604, the numbers 1-545 being assigned to the Mocha letters, 546-2286 to the Basra letters and 2287-2604 to the Bandar 'Abbas letters. Within these divisions the arrangement appears to be more or less chronological. These are not complete series of correspondence received from these factories; there are very few letters here for the early and late periods in particular. However the series seems to be reasonably complete for Bandar 'Abbas from 1721 to 1763 when the Factory was abolished, and for Basra from 1725 to 1804. Some of the earlier Basra letters are numbered in the Bandar 'Abbas series. Although these letters are those sent by the factories to the Court of Directors (and later to the Secret Committee as well) the enclosures include copies of correspondence which was considered to be of sufficient interest to be communicated to the Court between the Factories and the Governor-General and Council of Bengal, the President and Council of Bombay, country rulers (in translation), other factories and residencies in the Gulf and during the period of the Napoleonic wars with the Ambassador at Constantinople and the Commanders of the Red Sea and Mediterranean fleets. Also to be found among these letters are accounts, etc, of various kinds pertaining to the factories.
