- The warehouse was built in two stages: in 1787 on the site of the freehold portion of the old Navy Office, and in 1796 on the sites of the leasehold portion of the Navy Office and of an adjoining house purchased from Reverend Dr William Dobbin. The Navy Office was purchased by the East India Company from the Crown in 1787 for £13,500. New leases for part of the property were obtained from the Carpenters' Company in 1792 and from the trustees of Mary Baynham's Gift in 1800.
