- Custodial History:
- Until the Law of Property Act of 1925 limited the need to prove title to a period of fifty years, all surviving documents for earlier transactions were generally transferred to the new owners. Thus the East India Company came to hold a large collection of title deeds for both East India House and its warehouses, including many which pre-date the existence of the Company. A register compiled by the Company circa 1813 contains abstracts of title deeds relating to most of the pre-nineteenth century property transactions [L/L/2/1]. Brief entries for some estates acquired after 1813 were later added at the back of the register, and another less detailed register was drawn up circa 1830-36 [L/L/2/2]. The Charter Act of 1833 obliged the East India Company to sell its commercial premises, while East India House was sold after the British Crown took over the Company's administrative powers in 1858. Some of the deeds listed in the registers were passed to the new owners, as was the common practice; for example, a number of bundles for East India House were transferred to the purchasing syndicate in 1861 and were eventually deposited in the Guildhall Library by Lloyds of London. Many deeds for the warehouses and other properties did, however, remain in the custody of the East India Company and were inherited by the India Office Legal Adviser's Department. A number were deposited for safekeeping in the Accountant General's strong room by both the Company and the India Office [see L/L/2/3-4]. The collection of deeds was augmented in the late ninteeenth and early twentieth centuries by documents for property transactions involving the Secretary of State for India.
- Arrangement:
- The title deeds and the related documents have been listed in chronological sequences for each site or building. All dates have been given as New Style. Until 1752, the year ran from 25 March to the following 24 March, thus a document dated February 1670 was written later than one dated December 1670. In this list, dates between 1 January and 24 March have been converted from the old system i.e. February 1670 appears as February 1671. County names have been left as they appear in the documents eg Southampton for Hampshire. The term "London" generally refers to the City, with areas outside City boundaries falling within counties such as Middlesex and Surrey.
