- Scope & Content:
- The Naval Store warehouse at Stone Stairs Ratcliff stood on copyhold ground owned by the Manor of Stepney. Before 1794 the warehouse was leased by the East India Company from Guillaume and Company, who in turn leased the premises from the Freeman family. The warehouse was destroyed in July 1794 by the fire which spread through Ratcliff. In October 1794 Thomas Guillaume assigned his lease to the Company for £150 on condition that £1,500 was spent on rebuilding the warehouse. In November 1795 the Company purchased the copyhold of these premises with some additional property from Susannah Freeman for £5,000.
