- Title:
- East India College
- Scope & Content:
- In December 1804 the East India Company purchased a lease for 21 years on Hertford Castle from the Marquis of Salisbury. East India College opened at the Castle in February 1806 but the premises proved to be unsuitable and the Company decided to build a new College rather than undertake expensive alterations. The Company purchased a freehold estate at Haileybury Hertfordshire from William Walker in October 1805 for £5,900 and the College transferred there in 1809.
